Environment
We respect the health of the environment and aim to engage children in exploring ways in which we can reduce our impact on the environment.
We will do this by providing resources that encourage children to:
- Understand that if they act locally they can make a difference globally.
- Discover ways to reduce their environmental footprint.
- Learn about sustainability and conservation.
Voyage of Discovery
The first man in space was a cosmonaut, a Russian named Yuri Gagarin. His mission was a voyage that turned a dream into reality. This historic event was seen as a victory for the whole of mankind. Congratulations poured in from John F Kennedy (President of the United States), Harold MacMillan (Prime Minister of Great Britain), Charles De Gaulle (President of France), Jawaharlal Nehru (Prime Minister of India), Gamal Abdel Nasser (President of the United Arab Republic) and Sukarno (President of Indonesia). People from around the world rejoiced.
Like Yuri Gagarin, children taking part in the Rugged Moon Club are on a journey that is about showing the positive contribution mankind can make. On his return Yuri Gagarin said:
‘When I orbited the earth in the spaceship I saw how wonderful our planet is. Let us preserve and multiply its beauties instead of destroying them!’
These inspirational words are a great reminder as to why we should look after the environment. They offer us a truly global perspective. When we look out at space, it is not the beauty of one star that makes the night sky special. It is the collection of stars all shining together that make the night sky so amazing. Likewise, when Yuri Gagarin looked down at the earth from space, it wasn’t a particular individual, a country or continent that made the earth so wonderful. It was everything, the earth as a whole.
Rugged Moon Club members are children who are on a voyage of discovery. Like Yuri Gagarin’s famous space flight, the journey is not about the destination. Yuri never landed anywhere in space, his journey started and finished on earth.
Rugged Moon is currently considering submissions for resources that will engage children in these topics.
